Main Street by the Numbers
7 + 12 + 26 + 38 Equals 52 subtracting 6! Can YOU help correct that math?
HERE'S SOME DETAILS YOU'LL WANT TO READ and SHARE!
The process of transformation.
There's a lot of talk about why this Main Street project has been designed to have a 6-week timeframe. Many commenters on Facebook posts related to this project claim it shouldn't take that long, or that other road projects that were longer (like Northland at 13 mile) took less time. It's easy to be frustrated when you don't know the details.
So here's some details to help shed some light and some #CedarSpringsPositivePride.
This Phase 1 project includes:
7 intersections, between 17 Mile and Pine Street
26 major corner sidewalk reconstructions
38 utility access hole cone & covers to be removed, repaired/replaced & reset (aka manholes)
12 Pedestrian crossing curb enhancements for improved street crossings.
(yes, they heard your pleadings for easier pedestrian crossings)
8 inches deep of road pavement reconstruction
Half a mile of paving & striping
26 pedestrian crossing new striping patterns
52 businesses to accommodate who are struggling at the need to subtract 6 weeks of revenue sales from their budget with no relief of rent, utilities or lost income.
MDOT's stricter work safe regulations take extra labor time
Truckloads of construction signage to barricade intersections and drives
and 80+ degree heat and repeated heat indexes and heat advisories.
AND after 2 weeks of work
THEY ARE ON SCHEDULE!!!!!
What's the schedule? August 21 to September 29.
Because September 30th is the first Saturday of Red Flannel Fest
ON NEW PAVEMENT and NEW ADA Accommodating, Pedestrian Friendly, MDOT Approved Sidewalk Corners!!!!
Yes, it's gonna take longer than that 2 mile, no curbing, minimal manholes, no major changes, no sidewalks, and minimal pedestrian accommodations, project that happened earlier this summer on Norhtland drive near 13 mile that this project keeps getting shamed with. But it's apples vs brownies folks! Not the same kind of project. Rural road resurface vs downtown streets transformation.
AND It's gonna be SOOOO MUCH BETTER DOWNTOWN when it's done!
The pedestrian crossing should be easier, and ADA compliance should make better access for those who have to put in more effort to be downtown.
There will be more parking.
And SMOOOOTH pavement!
BUT Your 52 downtown businesses need your support during these slower days. They've had repeated business challenges in the past three years and they are struggling to make it. This project had to include ADA accommodations and completion this year for the MDOT funds that are contributing toward some (but not all) of the funding for this project.
Your presence downtown has already been planned for and accommodations await you! Use First Street and Second Street and Fifth Street to get to the side streets downtown. There is parking available. Go find the map post here or on the Cedar Springs BOB Facebook page. It shows you all the places you can park.
The many events that typically happen in September are still planned, and they need your participation to make them better. Come see the history of Main Street Transformation happen!
